Gort Services began trading in June 1970.
We originally specialised in fabric cleaning and stain retarding with
'Scotchgard' protector. Then in the early eighties we turned to the
application of flame retardants for the contract market with respect
to curtains and upholstery. Accelerated by the Manchester Airport plane
disaster and the damage to property and the loss of life caused by furniture
fires, interest in greater flame resistance of modern furnishing fabrics
grew. Gort Services already active in flame retardancy, was well placed
to develop methods of application to achieve the demands and new standards
that have become obligatory in the UK, for example, the Furniture and
Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988.
In 1989 Mr Bill Weatherson joined us having been previously employed
as a Science Lecturer in a College of Further Education: Bill has been
responsible for testing and research ever since. Due to our focus on
the 'Cut Length' market; few people will have handled as wide
a variety of furnishing fabrics and advised on their flammability as
has Mr Bill Weatherson. The company does not manufacture chemicals,
we do however carry out research on new products submitted to us by
large and small chemical suppliers, in order to keep abreast of recent
developments.
We still take the 'Cut Length' market very seriously and have
continued to maintain our service and delivery times in this area. We
also have a two day and three day 'Express Option' for 'impossible
deadlines' imposed upon our clients. In addition we handle many enquiries
for quantity production.
Our client list is impressive: major fabric producers and suppliers,
national hotel chains and furnishing stores, museums, colleges of music,
stately homes, HM prisons, theatres, ships chandlers, airlines, and
the one man upholsterer or one woman curtain shop, two or three blocks
